ANDREA FRASER Image of Andrea Fraser Andrea Rose Fraser (born 1965) is a performance artist, mainly known for her work in the area of institutional critique. Fraser is based in New York and Los Angeles and is currently Department Head and Professor of Interdisciplinary Studio of the UCLA School of Arts and Architecture at the University of California, Los Angeles. Andrea Fraser is an artist whose work has been identified with performance, feminism, and institutional critique. Fraser’s notable works include Museum Highlights (1989), in which the artist posed as a tour guide at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, leading visitors to consider “artworks” such as a drinking fountain; Untitled (2003), a recorded sexual encounter between Fraser and an art collector who paid nearly $20,000 for the work; Not Just a Few of Us (2014), a performance for Prospect.3 exploring desegregation struggles in New Orleans; and Down the River (2016), which brought the sounds of Sing Sing prison to the Whitney Museum of American Art’s 18,000 square-foot 5th floor.
