5:32 (2020) – Experimentation

Initial experimentations

Studio

I began by simply playing with the video and sound of a footage of a bottle falling down. The sound of the metronome brings the focus to the monotonous constant sound. I played with cutting off the footage and the audio at certain points to manipulate the temporal experience.

Here, I am utilising the echo effect in premiere pro. The 2nd video, I have placed a slow-paced video of me in the studio (passing of time) to the busyness of the traffic outdoors, to juxtapose the two.

I experimented with decreasing the shutter speed/aperture of the camera. Here, the light struggles to enter the camera which results in the footage being cut off, without any post-editing. Furthermore, this causes the colours of the strobe light to split and be visibly seen on camera (something that cannot be seen by the human eye). See 0:06 and 2:05 for reference.

Here I am interested in the progress bar of a video. The bar of the video highlights the progression of the video very clearly, which allows room to experiment with.

I am interested in the progress bar which is highly used in social media/ video streaming platforms. Though videos are explicit to its length of duration and features the progress bar (which allows viewer to see backwards and forward of the video), it seems like people still lose time on social media, streaming video after video endlessly until they realise that 3 hours have passed and they’ve watched over 30 videos in one sitting. I want to explore the relationship of social media and its power of manipulating and consuming our time.

I utilise the reverse effect in these two experiments (found footage) – one side playing forward and the other in reverse until they meet at the exact same point in time. (see 2nd video) .

Looking at memory and the body, I wanted to displace moments of memory onto the body. Over time, memories contract and condense, linked to our experiences especially in regard of the body. The body and the consciousness is what experiences the passage of time. We remember moments in relation to our body in the setting, senses (touch).

Further Experimentation of Projection

I continued with the concept of projecting onto the body. I took some footage of myself in different ways that would manipulate time. I explored repetition, movement (motion sequence/succession), lighting (refer back to strobe light experiment above & Gary Hill), sound, duration, timelapse.

Footage layering – shows the combination of events happening in one space (refer to Tango by Zbigniew Rybczyński)

Repetition – the cycle of time

Movement – explores motion sequence, succession with the play of strobe light (refer to earlier experiments) and its duration (to capture only a short moment of the event ~ refer to Gary Hill)

Time-lapse – Sunrise

After the experiments and the footage that I have edited in Premiere Pro, I found myself stuck in this area. I wasn’t feeling the concept of myself and my body being in the video and the practice of performance. One day, I would like to explore performance more, especially with dance, movement and sound altogether, as I have a dance background and genuinely enjoy it. However, in this project, I really wasn’t leaning into performance.
