Context Research

A favourite film director of mine is the acclaimed Christopher Nolan. I take a lot of inspiration from his films including Inception, Interstellar, Momento which all link to my theme of time. He is well known for centering his films around the concept of time, alongside his use of non-linear narrative which is used effectively in drawing the audience in and manipulating their perception of storyline/character. The movie Interstellar pertains to Einstein’s theory of general relativity for time-space, something that I’m also looking to involve at in my work.

ROTORSCOPE ANIMATION

These are some videos that I have researched and taken inspiration from for my animation.

For the first video and 2nd video, I enjoyed the combination of real-life footage and rotoscoping animation layered on top. I will do the same for my film/art project. I like how in the 2nd video, the rotoscoping animation is much simpler with a more abstract background as opposed to the first, where the rotoscoping animation is the main aspect of the video, interacting with the figures and varying largely, and being playful and fun.

This particular work titled Snack and Drink, by  Bob Sabiston and Tommy Pallotta, is really eye-catching and engaging. Not only did it made me realise that there are so many ways to rotoscope a footage, but that a simple footage can be manipulated and elevated depending on the way of animation, ie the colours, the style of drawing.

Ego Death

In my project, I wanted to manipulate time for the audience experiencing my work, I wanted to transcend time. I read somewhere that our perception of time is made up our ego: our sense of self, consciousness. To transcend time is to destroy the sense of self, therefore ego death. These are some of the readings I did for ego death, its meaning and context.

I wanted to put this concept ‘to lose the sense of self, is to transcend time’. I wanted to allude to the concept or experience of ego death.
